At Decorex Durban 2012, Plascon showcased the 2012 “Endless Possibility” Colour Forecast, by calling on four celebrated designers to each interpret one theme from the Forecast in creating part of the Plascon stand. Koop worked with the Shaw Sisters on the Outside Room.

Using natural materials and organic colours inspired by the Plascon Origins palette, the concept answered the complex question: “how do we enjoy the climate?” This project was when the show chair range was envisioned. The first version had cushions that were hand screen printed by the Shaw Sisters. Koop designed planter boxes made from reclaimed packing pine, that could stack up on each other to form a “green wall” the item won “best green product” of the show. The floor was also made from the reclaimed packing pine, placed in a herringbone pattern that wrapped up on to the walls. The planks were painted in the various colours from the Origins palette and made for a talking point for all visitors to the stand.

COP17 – South Africa Climate Change Response Expo

Design and construction of a display system to exhibit the work of various artists and architects for the Repurpose Exhibition at Priority zone: COP17. Everything used to build this show is reusable.

Coinciding with the start of COP17, the world’s most significant climate change conference and the biggest conference that South Africa has ever hosted, is the opening of the exhibition Repurpose, a creative exhibition of architecture without borders at The Priority Zone, 77b Monty Naicker Street.

Repurpose, was across the way from the International Convention Centre (ICC), the official venue of COP17 and ran from November 28 to December 15 2012. The four exhibitions-in-one was showcased in the headquarters of the Priority Zone Pilot Project, a working green building conversion that boasts a roof vegetable garden, sustainable water management and renewable energy.

The four exhibitions span two countries and were about the effects of architecture in public spaces. In keeping with the principles espoused by COP17, this is responsible and compassionate architecture that goes way beyond just buildings. It is architecture that changes behaviour and gives hope.

The Sao Paulo, Priority Zone, City Architects and The Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) exhibitions all dealt with varying levels with repurposing space and buildings and, through that, making a tangible difference to the people engaging or re-engaging within that space, and changing perceptions of that space. They are all positive interventions that lead to behavioural changes.

COP17 – South Africa Climate Change Response Expo

Koop designed and built WWF South Africa’s stand for the COP17 Climate Change conference and expo.

The design was based on an abstracted map to form the functional surfaces of the stand. A sitting surface winds up South America, around Africa and across to India. The bench was made of short lengths of bamboo. Hundreds of hand-made cushions make up the innovative seat comprised of recycled saris stuffed with material waste from clothing production. The small cushions are set in the top of each reed and make a pixilated pattern. A counter surface down Indonesia and into Australia and is finished as per the floor. The wall is clad full height in bamboo – varying shades of green and yellow – with Modulations to form backrests. All vertical surfaces are bamboo. The floor was made recycled packing crate pine that is laid flat on the floor in planks of varying width.

The display won best small stand for incorporating sustainable principles in the design and manufacture of the stand.
