Vukhuzakhe was a research project for the eThekwini Municipality Architectural Department, developing system/s for the delivery of an alternative building typology. Part of the research document focuses on an analytical comparison of available materials and building methodologies based on an established rating criteria. The other part of the document is a design proposal for a delivery system, which combines sensitive, inclusive site planning, outline principles for local resource and labour management as well as the simultaneous development of a replicable, simple, building component production. The design concepts outlined in the Vukhuzake research proposal were further developed for the delivery of the municipal fire stations for the city.
This project won The Afrisam-Saia Award For Sustainable Architecture 2014 for Category 2: Research
