A 6-bedroom luxury lodge on the Charters Creek area of Lake St Lucia designed with architect Stuart Mcloughlin.
At the time it was one of the first lodges where the developer was confident to fund contemporary design. Instead of a thatched roof Richard and Stuart designed and built a lightweight timber structure with well-lit interiors that allowed for a strong connection with the environment.
Most of the structural components, columns, trusses, doors, windows and screens were prefabricated. It is essentially an interlocking structural kit with bolted junctions.
It opened in 1998 and an additional luxury suite was added in 2001.
For the luxury suite Richard developed a design that was prefabricated in the workshop and installed on site in a few weeks, similar to a furniture project.
