Soon after graduation Richard ended up living with a community on the northern shores of Lake Sibayi and built two holiday accommodation camps. The first was a refurbishment of a very run down camp. There was no power and was built entirely with hand tools. The second was bigger, more complex and fortunately assisted by a generator and good friend and fellow architect, Patrick Largatzis.
It must have something to do with how they were taught architecture, especially by Rodney Harbour, that made them believe that anything was possible.
The time spent there was rewarding and is fundamental to the practice of design that Koop now follows.
